Let's Reinvent Public Space!

Find inspiration by pioneers and visionaries that redefine and reinvent public space. How can residents, visitors businesses, policy makers and city planners be invited to reinvent en co-create public space? Let's build dream castles on rooftops, envision future scenarios for the historical center and learn about intervention design.

WAAG

is a Future Lab for technology and society. Technology is not neutral. Waag reinforces critical reflection on technology, develops technological and social design skills, and encourages social innovation.

Waag works in a trans-disciplinary team of designers, artists and scientists, utilising public research methods in the realms of technology and society. This is how Waag empowers as many people as possible to design an open, honest and inclusive future.

ROEF 

is an annual festival, an event which shows the (undervalued) potential of the Amsterdam rooftops.  The uncultivated roofscape of Amsterdam is the size of Vondelpark times 25! By bringing together local residents, and by facilitating various stakeholders, ROEF is raising awareness for the transformation of the Amsterdam roofscape. In the six years of ROEF's existence, we have seen positive changes in high places. Super sustainable, innovative rooftops and new green roofs have now joined the city's roofscape, many of which are now part of ROEF's line-up, ready to be admired from up close. ROEF's vision of the Amsterdam roofscape? Holland's biggest rooftop park, connected by footbridges, allowing you to go from roof to roof to roof! But more importantly, what spaces can we create for the people of Amsterdam, what are the needs and wants? ROEF wants to hear from you, so we can develop rooftops that make sense.

WELCOME STRANGER

Welcome  Stranger creates opportunities for new encounters between art, artists  and the public in unexpected places. Originally, Welcome Stranger was  characterised by the fact that the art was shown in private homes.  Welcome Stranger has organized several manifestations and projects,  beginning in the 1990's. The initial manifestations were intended as a  comment on the official art circuit - not from recalcitrance or  idealism, but to seek reflection. Instead of a preconceived subject,  motto or motif, the focus was simply on the discoveries that naturally  arose from the situation: a house in the city, and with that the  interaction between private space and public space, publicness and  privacy.  As the relevance of these and their related issues only grows  within a surrounding of ever-increasing technical possibilities and  current events, Welcome Stranger continues to explore them unabated.

Case:

Since  the corona crisis has made it impossible to go in the house, the focus  has temporarily shifted to the outside: the façade and windows of the  houses, the line between inside and outside. Invited  by Welcome Stranger, four Amsterdam based artists create new artworks  this summer, specifically for the facade of their own house. In doing so  all contributing artists reveal something personal in the middle of  their own neighborhood, on the thin line between the private space and  the public domain. Four artist observations show up on various places in  the city, about the actions of people surrounding them. Every passer-by  is welcome to become acquainted with the works of art and the thoughts  they evoke. The flexibility needed in the past year proved the  importance of the alternative art space in creating new meaning and new  understanding to navigate the future.

REINWARDT ACADEMY -  INTERVENTION DESIGN

offers students of the Master Applied Museum and Heritage Studies a special program in Intervention Design. Students work in small groups on a client-requested intervention based on a stated problem concerning sustainability, inclusivity or digitality. They collectively develop a design concept and try to obtain support for new approaches and ideas for museum and heritage interventions, taking into consideration the conceptual and practical challenges addressed in the previous modules, while learning the principles of project and change management.

The intervention may be an exhibition concept, advice on a collection, a public programme or a combination of these. In this way, students get opportunities to study and research more in depth specific dimensions of museum and heritage work of personal interest, while working in small teams for a real client. Students who wish to focus on exhibitions and audiences will work with insights from visitor studies, storytelling and narrative design.
